Inside the Regency Town House

The Regency Town House is a 5 storey Grade 1 listed building in Brunswick Square, Hove and also includes a basement annex a few doors away. The house and basement are currently under restoration with the long-term aim of opening as a museum and heritage centre.

Between the 1930s and 1980s much of Brighton & Hove’s historic architecture was severely damaged. Many Regency and Victorian houses were no longer suited to modern families and lifestyles and were frequently subject to neglect and gradual decay. In time, most came to be redeveloped as apartments, often with little or no regard for their historical features causing much original detail to be lost forever. The Regency Town House project was established in the 1980s to ensure the conservation of a Grade 1 listed Brighton home. The property selected was No.13 Brunswick Square,  built in the 1820s as part of architect Charles Augustin Busby’s remarkable Brunswick Town development. No.13 was ideal for preservation, displaying beautiful original plasterwork, joinery, fireplaces and ironwork. The original aim was to restore the house to its former glory and provide Brighton & Hove with a museum of life above and below stairs in the regency period.

A short time later the trust was offered the opportunity to purchase the basement of No,10 Brunswick Square which was virtually unaltered since it was first used as servants quarters nearly 200 years ago. This rare architectural gem has now become part of the Regency Town House, albeit 3 doors away!
